Paul Fairhurst

Managing Partner

Paul is the Managing Partner of FM&C Solicitors. He is admitted as an Advocate of the Supreme Court of South Africa and specialises in Commercial and Intellectual Property Law. He has over 30 years of business experience in a vast array of industries, holding senior management positions with companies in the banking, oil and wireless industries. He has focused on building strategic alliances between start-up and medium sized enterprises and worked with sponsors, investors and major media companies to drive customer acquisition and revenue growth. He is expert at developing mission critical strategies and initiatives and setting out realistic execution plans. His legal training and business experience are valuable in structuring, negotiating and closing innovative agreements and managing resulting partnership relationships.

Paul holds BA and LL.B. degrees (Witwatersrand) and an M.B.A. specialising in International Finance and Marketing (European University). He also holds an LL.M. degree (Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property in Munich).

Aaron Menuhin

Operations Partner

Aaron Menuhin is the Operations Partner at FM&C Solicitors and specialises in commercial law and litigation. He works between the UK and Germany and is qualified in international management with an M.Sc. from SOAS. He has expertise in commercial property, company acquisitions, cross border contracts and contract disputes as well as a range of litigation issues. His international expertise brings to FM&C a broad vision of the current possibilities on offer to law firms. Aaron holds a great respect for the law and enjoys managing a team of well qualified and motivated lawyers.

Michael Website

Michael Whatley


Michael Whatley qualified in 1971 and has had a wealth of experience in most aspects of the law.  Michael served his articles in the city; in 1975, he started his own practice and moved from London to Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket in 1990.  His legal expertise extends to contractual disputes, equine, reversionary interest, buying and selling of licensed premises, general debt recovery and conveyancing.

Michael is also a Duty Solicitor and an advocate in the Magistrate’s Courts and occasionally in the Crown and County Courts.  Michael also leads the Criminal Defence Team dealing with the majority of matters dealt with in the Magistrates’ Court and high profile cases in the Crown Court.

His personal interests include most aspects of country life including riding, hunting, successful racehorse ownership, golf, tennis, squash.  He is married with three grown up children.

Alan Caldwell


Alan holds an LL.B. Honours Degree in Law from Trent Polytechnic Nottingham, qualifying as a solicitor in 1989.  Over his 24 years in practice, Alan has gained wide experience in Conveyancing, Family and Matrimonial Law as well as Employment, but makes no secret of his passion for Criminal Law. As a consequence, in his role as a Criminal Defence Solicitor he is an active Police Station and Court Duty Solicitor, appearing regularly in Magistrate Courts throughout Cambridge, Essex and Suffolk. Alan has also sat as a Member of the Essex Criminal Justice Board as well as on the committee of the Haverhill Chamber of Commerce.

A “ham” actor on the amateur stage in his youth, Alan loves the theatre, movies and good quality television drama.

Kerry Wigg

Partner and Head of Litigation

A Solicitor with over 20 years civil litigation experience, Kerry completed her Degree in Law LL.B. (Hons.) at Anglia University and obtained an LL.M. in International Human Rights Law at Essex University. Thereafter, she completed the Law Society Final Examination at Guildford College of Law.

A Dispute Resolution specialist, she advises on contract disputes, employment law, debt recovery, consumer claims, neighbour and boundary disputes, landlord & tenant disputes, contentious probate and professional negligence. An expert in personal injury claims, including tripping/slipping accidents, work place accidents and occupational disease claims, Kerry is member of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL). She has also represented clients who have been victims of crimes of violence and children and adults who have been victims of abuse. Kerry has a special interest in Equestrian Law and can assist commercial and individual clients with a range of legal issues relating to horse use and ownership.

Tim Piper

Senior Consultant
Commercial and Company Law

Tim Piper brings to bear 50 years of commercial experience to FM&C. Tim read law at Lincoln College, Oxford before qualifying as a solicitor. He has spent his professional career involved in all the main aspects of corporate and business law both in the City of London and the West End, including takeovers, mergers, flotations, joint ventures, partnerships, agency and distribution agreements and general private and public company work. He also takes an interest in copyright, trade marks and other intellectual property rights.

Tim is a former member of the Council of The Law Society and was President of his local Law Society. He was Master of his City Livery Company-the Tallow Chandlers in 2006/7,where he remains on the Court. He is currently Deputy Chairman of The Incorporated Council of Law Reporting for England and Wales, which publishes the definitive Law Reports.

Tim’s outside interests include horse racing and rowing; being a member of The Royal Enclosure at Ascot and The Stewards Enclosure at Henley, as well as cricket and Rugby Union football. He also enjoys classical music and collecting antiques.

Simon Saunders

Wills and Probate

Simon studied Law at Sheffield Hallam University and then moved across the city to the University of Sheffield to complete the Legal Practice Course. Following the completion of his studies, he moved back to London where he worked at a busy high street firm for two years. He has worked in Saffron Walden since April 2012, initially working in the Wills, Probate and Elderly Client department. Simon takes great enjoyment in solving his client’s problems in a practical, friendly and caring manner.

Outside of work Simon has a keen interest in travelling and watching live music. He is also a keen sportsman with a particular love for football and badminton.

Alessandra Sulzer


Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Ali graduated with an A.B. (Magna cum laude) from Harvard, a D.Phil. from Oxford (Corpus Christi College), and an LL.B. from BPP Law School in London, where she went on to complete the Legal Practice Course. Ali has had experience in Cambridge in Property and Employment law. Previously a research analyst at a legal strategy consultancy in London, she has also carried out research into the legal industry while at the publishing house Chambers & Partners. She is a native speaker of English and Spanish.

In her spare time, she enjoys playing field hockey and choral singing. She is also an avid pianist and flautist.
